Public School Students Change Mind on Abortion Upon Hearing Dr. J Speak at Political Science Class
Dr. Johnston was a very good speaker. I think his presentation was very effective. I used to believe that after the first trimester, abortion should be allowed, but after seeing some of the pictures that he showed in his presentation, it made me change my mind.
Another student changes his mind:
Dr. Johnston was probably my favorite speaker that we have had thus far this year. Before this class, I did not have a strong opinion on abortion because I hadn’t heard any of the arguments for either side. After hearing the pro-choice advocate Jaime Miracle talk, I thought there was a valid argument for legalized abortion. Dr. Johnston’s presentation caused me to immediately become pro-life. I thought his presentation was interesting and kept the entire class attentive, and his use of pictures really brought the issue to life. Every point he made seemed very well thought out and extremely logical and backed up by scientific fact.
I couldn’t find any weaknesses in Dr. Johnston’s presentation. He completely blew Jaime Miracle out of the water in my opinion, and all of the points she had made the day before seemed completely irrelevant. I also enjoyed the final ten minutes of our class in which we were allowed to ask questions. For the first time this year, I completely agreed with every answer that was given to the questions. Overall, I saw Dr. Johnston as professional and knowledgeable, and for the first time this year I can honestly say that a speaker caused me to take a side on an issue.
Another student no longer makes excuses for abortion:
Patrick Johnston’s presentation on abortion really opened my eyes, and I believe those of many others, to the issue of abortion. I have never been completely for abortion; however, I believed that there were circumstances such as rape in which abortion was a considerable option. I realize that these circumstances are not the woman’s fault, but like Johnston pointed out, no one has the right to deny life to anyone else, and that includes unborn children. Johnston related the issue to the real world, like pointing out that it would not be acceptable to kill an infant simply because the child did not fit with a woman’s current lifestyle. He presented abortion to us in a very straight-forward, in-your-face kind of way, and I think that is what many students needed to see.
I was very impressed that Johnston could answer any and all questions that came his way, without a moment of hesitation. He knew his facts, and many people had a hard time refuting his statements. Unlike many pro-life activists, Johnston did not make his statement solely on the basis of religion, but had scientific proof to go along with his opinions.
Dr. Johnston’s presentation was very helpful and impossible to ignore. He is very realistic with his beliefs and knows that the cold, hard truth is what it takes to make people listen. His stories of the experimentation they perform on aborted babies painted a mental picture that I will not soon forget. Dr. Johnston did a wonderful job speaking to our class, and I wish him luck in everything he does in the future to promote his cause.
A fourth student decides that she would never have an abortion:
After the first abortion speaker, who was pro-choice, I felt more lenient on having an abortion, but after Dr. Johnston came in I was totally shifted back to pro-life. I think what made his speech so affective was the fact that he was very qualified to talk about it. He was a doctor and he did his own research. He is a religious leader so he feels strongly about the issue, and even offers to adopt children that would otherwise be killed. The slides he brought in were a little gruesome, but sometimes you need to see the truth even if it is awful. If you keep hiding from what is really happening, of course it is going to be easy to allow it. Another thing that made him very effective was that he was always for life, and there were no special circumstances that made having an abortion acceptable.
